Fedora Core 6 Testing

Right now I'm using Fedora Core 6 and found it one of the most stable linux distribution for my laptop that is. We all hear how Ubuntu is taking the linux crowd, but i disgress. My laptop doesn't like Ubuntu. One of the first problems, video adapter. It seems the only distribution which is compatible out of the box for my laptop is openSUSE 10.2. For ubuntu and fedora, we need to set it up manually. Probably you asked, hey, WHY do you have to set it up? Isn't right now about simplicity? I can answer that I am a poweruser. I don't mind doing setting up a lil bit.

for opensuse, installation is a breeze. everything worked out of the box. but what i meant worked it just worked. It's not stable. One out of two occasion when i restart my laptop, it will hang for no reason. this can't be good. is it because of the beryl package i installed? i don't think so because it happens before i installed beryl.

for ubuntu 6.10, after you configure X Server manually using depkg-configure xserver-xorg to make it run, other creepy bugs come out of nowhere. for instance, my mouse clicks will die after a few clicks. Even alt-tab won't solve the problem. And when you type the word example, it will become exaaaaaaaaaampleee. probably because of the setting of the mouse and keyboard. I don't know it just don't work.

For fedora core 6 (x86 and x86_64), you have to use linux vesa to get the anaconda installer to start in graphical mode. for x86, after the installation, you can go to X and set your graphics driver and monitor manually using graphical interface. but for x86_64, you won't go into X. you will be stuck in console mode. you need to be root and type system-config-display to set your graphic and monitor.

But after that, it's a bliss as my fedora core have never been stable. In fact so stable, made me wonder why in the world I used Ubuntu, as fedora core serves me well. No creepy bugs. i update everything using yum -y update. For wireless, it's a little bit tricky as it does not work out of the box. i have to install using freshrpms repo.

Working late everyday!

Hello there! It's been like a miracle that I can blog here. To tell you all the truth, I have been busy with my new work. The technology I used there is ASP.NET with C#. Well, programming is not really an issue for me there, it's just that the adapting to their methodology is quite a bit of challenge. We're using ASP.NET 2.0 with NHibernate. So basically, it's not pretty straightforward anymore. If I want something from the database that doesn't contain in the Data Access Layer, then I have to create it. After that I have to create the Business Logic Component, and finally I can use it in the Controller, and this Controller will be used by the respective page. Woah.

Right now I'm really not in a speed mode, as I have to understand everything first, the system, ASP.NET, Yahoo! UI, yui-ext, then I code. So for anyone who knew me said that I am fast at programming, well, right now I'm as slow as a snail. It'll be somewhere in next month that I will go back to fast lane again. In the meantime, slow lane for me.

Just today my new task is to make the system compatible with firefox. well, that's really frakking challenging as the system was only catered for internet explorer. So have to recheck all the pages in the system. Good thing the system uses MVC ;-)

Okay, off to bed!

Wireless in Kuching

I brought my Aztech DSL-600EW home to Kuching, just to test it capabilities, whether or not it is feasible to use wireless in this big house. Apparently, it is feasible, because right now I'm in my old room, which is at the end of the house on the 2nd floor, with the door closed, and I can still surf the Internet, with my Intel PROSET telling me that I have excellent signal.

To a geek, that's cool. I even sold this modem to my parents, so that they can use this wireless in this house. And probably my mum will bring back her laptop home so she can surf the Internet in her room, and probably my dad will probably buy a new laptop, but I think he need to have approval from my mum first. Probably my sisters will appreciate this most, as both of them have laptops, and will be pretty convenient for them not going out from their room.

So the first thing that I will do when I go back to KL is to buy that same modem, because the modem itself is so cool. Just hope that the price will not go up. Or worse, sold out!

LCCT: Low Cost Carrier Terminal

Right now I'm at the LCCT (Low Cost Carrier Terminal) and I must say I am surprised to see that they are offerring WiFi to passengers who are waiting for departure. Especially useful for passengers who are experiencing flight delay, such as myself right now. My flight was supposed to take off at 5pm, but it seems that AirAsia delay the flight to an unknown schedule. hmmpph AirAsia. "Now Everyone Can Wait". Sucks big time.

Anyway I am on my way back to Kuching, for Hari Raya Aidiladha. It seems like yesterday I was in Kuching celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Well, time sure flies. My flight does not for the time being.

DELL Inspiron 640m

Hello there. I'm good by the way. It's been a while but I have been very busy with work. Usually less work at the end of the year, but where I work, this is not the case. This is my final month in my current company, so feeling a little sad. But to move forward, we have to leave something behind. And that's true, since there have been good memories, and wealthy experience

Anyway, I'm writing this post here using my first laptop. Seriously, I never had a laptop for myself. The first laptop that I remember was my dad's, and it's a 386. The screen was very small (and I was small then...) but the laptop is not that big but it's very thick. Ah, yes, the laptop was a Texas Instruments. The second one was also my dad's, and it's a COMPAQ. Lasted for one year plus, just after the warranty ended. And because of that my dad did not buy a laptop since. And the third one was my sister's. An ASUS laptop. I've bought this laptop (not financially of course) for my sister's birthday, and I was amazed by it's specs. A Pentium III 1.13 GHz Tualatin, 256MB RAM and 15GB HDD, Mobility Radeon, which was impressive even for a Pentium III class desktop. But that's the thing. The first lesson I learn, don't buy a laptop purely because of its specs. The laptop was so damn heavy! And buy from a respectable brand.

Mine is a DELL Inspiron 640m, or internationally known as Inspiron E1405. The reason I picked a DELL was not because of it's brand, but rather because of it's online store. I customized the laptop to fit a Core 2 Duo T5500 (1.66GHz), 1GB of DDR2 667, 60GB Seagate Momentus.7200 (yes, you assume correctly, a 7200 RPM notebook hard disk) and a 14.1 TrueLife with WSXGA+ (1440x900 resolution rocks!). Well, the TrueLife is actually a glossy LCD by the way. Oh, with an original Windows XP Home.

Actually one of the things I regretted was not picking Windows XP Media Center Edition, as right now Microsoft is promoting a free upgrade to Windows Vista if you use XP MCE or XP PRO. But including that in my purchase was a no as my budget does not permit me. But what the hell, XP Home is not that bad anyway (unless you are planning to develop Oracle Forms/Database, then we have a problem)

I'll be using this laptop for "work" ;-). I'll leave that to you for the interpretation. Till next time.

It seems Google will close the Google Answers

Google is a company fueled by innovation, which to us means trying lots of new things all the time -- and sometimes it means reconsidering our goals for a product. Later this week, we will stop accepting new questions in Google Answers, the very first project we worked on here. The project started with a rough idea from Larry Page, and a small 4-person team turned it into reality in less than 4 months. For two new grads, it was a crash course in building a scalable product, responding to customer requests, and discovering what questions are on people's minds

I think that Google's innovation to the Internet is admirable. And offering their applications for our pleasure is a great thing. I am sure their experience in Google Answer will help them create more innovative application in the future

Multi File Batch Compression

I was working today when suddenly I have a warning on my taskbar, stating that I am low on disk space on drive D:. This was actually contributed by the MySQL data backup that I scheduled everyday. Before I store these files to the main server, I have to compress them in zip format. So when I saw these files, I was stunned because there was a lot of files. Gigabytes. Compressing all of them into a single file is unacceptable, and compressing them one by one is a tedious task.

So what's my solution?

Batch compression
I'm not really good at Windows BAT file programming, so I use Java to act as a batch script(aka console application) to compress the files individually. Quite simple really. Get the files in the directory, filter it by .sql, called a command line compressor and compress it one by one.

I used ConTexT for my editor, and the 7z.exe executable to compress the files one by one. Nice eh? Probably I will post the source code tomorrow.

Maybe I can use the same concept to rename my Anime into another naming convention of my own: [DB]_Naruto_-_208_[FEDFED].avi to Naruto 208 [DB] [FEDFED].avi. Well that something to consider.

Symfony and Eclipse

Probably you've seen that I haven't been posting regularly for the past few days. Well, it's the end of the year, and jobs keep coming. Anyway just want to share something with you.

I've been researching symfony, which is by the way a php framework that is totally cool for a lazy developer like me. It introduces the removal of the thing that I hate most in PHP programming, code repetition. In symfony, we will concentrate more in business logics, rather than other things such as session management. Sometimes I feel like a fool, doing everything again for every systems that I have done. Well, that's how you learn I guess. In order to appreciate symfony, you need to do all the manual PHP programming, again and again. In my case, after I have finished my system at work, I have to maintain it. That's the hard part.

And for editing the source code, I use an editor called ContexT. It looks like Textmate, which is by the way available for Mac only. Textmate is used in the screencast in symfony, so I decided to use ContexT as it is the closest thing to Textmate. But I feel that I need a more powerful editor

Enter Eclipse. This is the IDE that I have been using for learning Java Struts. I find it complicated, steep learning curve, but what the hell, it's free to download. It looks professional, full featured but a system hogger (most probably contributed by Java as the IDE is fully Java based). I cannot use the IDE at work(I only use 2.66GHz P4 with 256MB RAM) unless I only use the IDE! Any other application must be off, oh and Windows Classic Theme all the way. So i integrate Eclipse with symfony, so that I can use the IDE for developing symfony based application. How cool is that? Intellisense anyone? Man it saves my life. Probably in the future I will post a guide to integrate symfony and eclipse although you can find it here. Chuunnnla...

I had pretty high expectations for Fedora Core 6 and in some ways they were met. FC 6 certainly is one of the best looking distro’s I have seen, especially for a default installation. Yet, several smaller issues crept into FC 6 that made me wonder how prepared this release was for final release. The problems that I encountered with Fedora Core 6 were not huge issues, but there were enough smaller bugs that made me wonder if this release was rushed.

Nice tutorial there. High Dynamic Range, astonished by computer graphics (games mostly) but need a beefy graphics card. Probably my next upgrade. :-D

However, I've noticed as I look around that most of the other photographers out there who work with HDR are creating images that, while often extremely interesting, look absoloutely nothing at all like the scene they were shooting -- and even if they do get it close, they end up with photos that have an enormous amount of HDR processing artifacts, such as halos. The reason for this is a popular program known as Photomatix. Photomatix is actually a very competent HDR assembler, but it's tone mapping functions tend to look a bit on the silly side. At least in my opinion.
